Movie Title: A League of Their Own A League of Their Own is available for streaming or downloading. |
Why is Geena Davis an Oscar-winner? View this flick; you won’t need to ask that again. Her sensitive portrayal of Dottie Hinson highlights the many facets of Davis’ talents as an actress. I loved watching a part of history (however dramatized) which took spot during my early childhood. Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell were surprisingly superb as the loudmouth-but-secretly-caring-and-feeling Mae and Doris. You’ll plunge in care for with Ann Cusack’s “Shirley Baker”, and unpleasant, horrid but super-star batter Marla Hooch is someone you impartial gotta root for. Tom Hanks gives us his usual glorious performance as the arrogant, boozy and cynical (but in for some surprises) coach Jimmy Dugan. The chauvinistic/sexist plot the female players were treated (professional baseball in a cocktail waitress costume!? ) by management, the public and the press (“…after all, they’re only girls.”) will incense many viewers, but it’s the device things actually were then. For the movie to be made any other plot would be less than truth. The diagram that the sincere Dotties, Kits, Maes, Dorises and the others dealt with those attitudes surely contributed to social change and enlightenment about the abilities of the female half of our population. A compliment, also, to the casting people; where did they score the older look-alikes? Notably, Lynn Cartwright as “Older Dottie” and Eugenia McLin as “Older Ellen Sue”. This movie is for everyone. Comedy with poignant drama. If you like teary endings, bring the Kleenex. The nostalgia scenes will begin the roam. Grand, substantial movie.
A League of their Gain was one of the best movies I’ve ever had the pleasure to search for. I had seen it years ago and recently bought my bear copy of it. This movie is one of the best that Penny Marshall has ever directed. The casting was honorable. Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell were perfect as street-wise, but loveable May and Doris! Geena Davis did a astonishing job playing Dottie Henson, who had a ample cherish for the game, yet had responsibilities and priorities that were more principal to her. Lori Petty was tremendous as Kit, Dottie’s slight sister who fought so hard to collect out from under her sister’s shadow. Marla Hooch, what a stout character!! Evelyn and her tiny boy Stillwell “Angel” will hold you in smiling all the time you want to bean him with a baseball bat. Ellen Sue, Helen, Betty Spaghetti, I feel like I know them all!! And Tom Hanks plays one of his best roles ever, as Jimmy Duggan, an ex-ball player turned coach. Not too thrilled with the job of coaching “girls”, he accepts the job and finally comes to respect them as a team and as baseball players. I consider one of the best parts of the movies is when the ball players reunite after 40 years and the casting of the older woman to play the parts of the aging ball players is a masterpiece. It is mighty how these older “look-alikes” were all brought into this movie. This is a movie worth watching, owning and recommending. Very few advance along in a lifetime that provide so mighty valid, determined entertainment, but this movie has it all. I recommend it highly!

Very jubilant to hear Fleshy Albert is coming out on DVD. I grew up on this wholesome reveal that taught me values and how not to see down on somebody who is different. Not easy for a white boy from Georgia to do. Thanks Bill, I appreciate that stout guy.

The feeling I win when watching them has never left me. Recently I found a copy of the Christmas special and it establish tears in my eyes. I simply can’t wait to fetch all of these on DVD. Like many of my other well-liked shows, it’s overwelming emotionally that these are coming to DVD.
This is a “best of” status featuring 20 favorites based on internet research thru search engines. But there’s some confusion as to whether all episodes will be realised as Season sets or in a random manner like this residence. It’s hard to hold, but at this point I’m avoiding this one so I don’t risk having to rebuy some of these next year.

The company UrbanWorks Entertainment says that they have acquired the rights to most of the episodes including the specials done for Halloween, Christmas and Easter but excluding the 1969 pilot episode “Hey, Hey, Hey, It’s Chubby Albert” that only aired once and was owned by NBC not CBS which aired the rest of the series. They will commence releasing all of them in 2005. So it unbiased sounds like this is an expensive “teaser”.
I say wait. Personally I’ll have to condition myself not to order this or consume it up if I peruse it in the store. Wish me luck.
And Hey, Hey, Hey! Have a delighted day!
I’m at a loss of words for this reveal. I can’t possibly praise it high enough to do it justice. I watched it religiously every Saturday morning as a white kid from a well-off neighborhood where there were no “minorities.” This note was probably intended to aid unlit kids create the fair decisions in a hard life, and I’m positive it did. The lessons it taught applied to everyone regardless of hasten and the message definately got through to all. But from my perspective, it probably did more to befriend white kids net over the racism that was unexcited going strong in areas like my neighborhood, and it accomplished this without me even realizing it aid then. That’s ok. I realize it now.

Movie Title: Watership Down Watership Down is available for streaming or downloading. |
I saw this film for the first time after a friend who had seen it in the theater in 1978 recommended it. I was prepared to peep a children’s movie and was struck by the seriousness of the subject and the realistic scenes.
The film begins with the mythology of the rabbit which is rather curious but in a cute diagram. This introduction foreshadows the hardships and enemies the rabbit species will face. From there the tale seems to touch on at least two issues: fascism/Marxism and environmentalism. The latter is only briefly touched on. The little rabbit Fiver, who has unexplained powers to foresee the future, urges a group of fellow rabbits in his “warren” to leave before their land is destroyed by some destructive force. Actually, it is man who tears up their fields, but it is only described briefly by a survivor. In their meander to the pleasant mountain top (utopia? ), they encounter several enemies and a laughable bird friend (my common of the characters) . Once they advance their destination, they realize that they have no females in their group (the only “doe” having been killed) and must return to perilous territory to find mates. Their worst enemy, ironically, is a member of their beget species; a fascist rabbit who threatens to have any dissenter from his warren killed. Also, ironically, inventions of man (i.e. a boat) are feeble by the rabbits in their struggle to survive. A musical segment with music sung by Art Garfunkel interrupts the fairly fast-moving myth.
The violence in this film is surprisingly realistic and graphic. Some rabbits do not form it, so very young children may need to be prepared before watching. I also looked at a VHS copy of this film, and DVD is far generous in terms of graphics and color. The extras on this DVD were a shrimp disappointing considering that this film is a classic (i.e. a glossary of rabbit words that is not even complete) . Mild, this though-provoking film is one that adults may savor more than the kids.
Like many of the reviewers before me I first watched this aid when I was a child and yes it did provoke a range of emotions in me. I cheered when they escaped on the boat; I was sickened in the narrate of the fate of the first warren. I admit it 15 years on I unruffled scream at the raze of the movie. Don’t be fooled into thinking objective because it’s and intelligent feature about rabbits that this film will be proper for younger kids, it is NOT. Watership down has quite graphic representations of brutality and death. Putting those facts aside it does remark a compelling chronicle about a band of refugees looking for some situation to resettle and live their lives out in peace. It unprejudiced happens that the refugees are rabbits.

This is a legend of survival. It is a dilapidated tale told in a compose maintain scheme. It is told with an edge of realism that contradicts the candy coating of the animation and character species. I honest bought a copy of this so my wife and I could spy it. Melanie (My wife) having not seen it before and not smart what to examine was left speechless when Violet was gone. If I were to rate the film I would give it at least a PG maybe even a PG 13 for its possible NIGHTMARES for younger children. I give the fable 4 stars for being consuming and well told

I was very disappointed with this DVD. So grand so that I’m returning my copy of it. I saw the movie in theatres, and found it masterful. The extraordinary tone is piece of the beauty of the film, and the subtitles on the US DVD release are a travesty. They win most of the subtlety from the tone and characters (peer http://iconsoffright.com/news/2009/03/let_the_wrong_subtitles_in_to.html for examples) . The movie I saw in theatres was a masterpiece; the movie on this DVD (using subtitles) is a mediocrity. If you are going to bewitch this DVD, either download and expend the theatrical subtitles or consume the mediocre dubbing track. As for me, I’m going to spy for another region’s copy or wait for a re-release.

This is a bit more of a serious myth than you might normally examine. They do a fairly decent job of retelling the sage of St. Nicholas without getting into the ramifications of the unusual day memoir.
But this video is collected comic. Most of the humor comes from Larry, who keeps exasperating Bob by trying to fit the epic into the Santa memoir. Of course, the costumes Mr. Lunt wears as he helps Nicholas in the second half are laugh out loud silly as well. Especially the second one.
Speaking of whom, Mr. Lunt does the laughable song this go around. “Donuts for Benny” starts out fun but gets shipshape laughable at the ruin. I loved it! I insist the music reminded me of a classic Christian song, but I couldn’t set which one it was.
The music is ample on this video as a whole. There are several unique songs, but they also parody Christmas classics like “Deck the Halls” and “Jingle Bells.”
While a tad more on the serious side, this is a dependable gem. Glean this now, and your family will be pleased it for years to near.
Excellent topic & worthy NEEDED discussion for children!
this can really initiate up doors for a separation between what has become Santa and the roots of St. Nicholas.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because of the imagined snow and the sheep that became like reindeer.. i really believe they stretched it too considerable and I’m not positive that younger kids will be able to separate it out between what is being imagined and what they are really trying to record about the dependable chronicle.
the music is ample.
the music video made me sob.
the intent of the video is Wonderful.
the yarn is fantastic & really considerable. I am so elated they made this!

The reviewers who did not like it clearly expected something for microscopic kids. It is not. It is very abstract in places, especially the art, which is really quite fabulous. Eye for the invent of the panthers, and the bats. And the landscapes. Incredible stuff.

Warmly recommended for frail viewers with an edgy sense of humor.
THE EMPEROR’S Unique GROOVE is the funniest movie that I have seen in years. I initially had passed on watching it in the theater because I notion it looked childish, but was convinced to give it a try now that it was out on video. Boy, was my initial impression base.

The narrative revolves around a selfish prince who is turned into a llama by one of his subjects. With the succor of a righteous peasant he attempts to glean his throne, and in the process finds there’s more to him than he previously conception or wanted there to be. While the right is a trustworthy one, it really plays a secondary role to the comedy, which is literally non-stop. GROOVE takes the rapid-fire humor that Disney perfected in Aladdin and combines it with cartoon-style hijinx, the wit of David Spade, and a hilarious lack of reverence for the weak Disney enthralling genre. Spade plays his role to perfection, and luckily never crosses the line into being heinous. Seinfeld fans are in for a treat, as Puddy plays a very special side-kick role. You really can’t seize your eyes off the mask for a limited, because you’re guaranteed to miss a gag of some sort. The humor works mainly on an adult level, even though kids will be rolling from the comic visuals and some of the more sure jokes.
The DVD itself is a obliging one. The digital transfer was pleasant and the sound quality is top notch. The commentary track is one of the better that I’ve heard, with fascinating and silly insight from all contributors. Inspiring menus. There’s a deleted scene that was probably best left out, but is gripping to gaze anyway, plus a few other fun features.
In the raze, this is one of the best Disney flicks to arrive along in years. Hardcore Disney fans will eat it up. But even if you’re not a fan of Disney’s usual gripping features you should give GROOVE a shot. Cast aside your pre-concieved notions and you fair might be in for a very valid surprise. I was. FIVE STARS.

I loved this movie. It was largely panned by American critics, never even making it to American theaters, except for maybe one or two in NYC (none in LA) .

The film provided a fine, complex viewpoint of some of the problems that modern-day Brazil faces. If you seek at comments of reviews of this film on major publications’ web sites (like NYTimes, LA Times, etc), you will recognize that the overwhelming majority of comments are from Brazilians who: 1) loved the movie, and 2) stated that the movie got the residence upright.
The film shows the point of notion of patriotic police officers that want to do true by their country, although they are confounded by their fellow police officers, the well-armed drug dealers, the bought-off constituents of the slums (favelas), as well as the leftist middle class that excoriates the police on the one hand for its heavy handed tactics as well as its corruption while at the same time sustaining the local drug lords by buying their product.

It is the film’s viewpoint towards the leftist middle class that I assume doomed the film to never gather a agreeable showing in the US. That, and the fact that this “just” police force feels obligated (and in the eyes of some in the viewing public, justified) to exercise extra-judicial, heavy handed tactics to catch results in fighting crime.
SEE THIS FILM!
The movie is quite violent, so it will appeal to action movie fans, but more than that, it is a social movie.
I was born and raised in Rio, end to one of the many favelas in that city.
Years ago, I attended the same university one of the characters in the movie did. The students there are accurately depicted. They are upper middle class students that preach peace and social services, but while doing that, they also smoke pot. When I didn’t behold any problems at the time, but now, I can behold the hypocrisy of preaching peace, but also financing the violence by smoking pot.
I also have a really ample high school friend that’s a Capitain now in the PM (Military Policy) . He’s not fraction of that Elite Squad, but he’s an impartial cop. So while severly underpaid, there ARE fair cops out there.
Not really a movie review, but a rant, but this movie was quite realistic and nostalgic for me.

Stream The Big Sleep Movie Online.
Movie Title: The Big Sleep The Big Sleep is available for streaming or downloading. |
THE Immense SLEEP has a reputation for being a film that gets lost in its enjoy complexity and which fails to clearly identify all the perpetrators of all the murders that litter its scenes. There is a definite truth to this: like the Raymond Chandler current on which it is based, the situation is extremely complicated, and it requires the viewer to mentally track an unexpected number of characters–including two characters that never appear on cover, a pivotal character who doesn’t actually have any lines, and a character who is frequently mentioned but doesn’t appear until approach the film’s conclusion. There is not, however, as remarkable truth to the accusation that the film never exposes all the killers: only one killer is not specifically identified, but even so his identity is very clearly implied.
All this having been said, THE Vast SLEEP is one helluva movie. In general, the legend concerns the wealthy Sternwood family, which consists of an aging father and two “lovely and glowing wild” daughters–one of whom, Carmen, is being victimized by a blackmailer. P.I. Philip Marlowe is hired to regain rid of the blackmailer, but an unexpected destroy complicates matters… and touches off a series of killings by a number of parties who have covert interests in the Sternwood family. Perhaps the most astounding thing about the film is that you don’t actually have to prefer apart the complicated memoir in order to devour it. The script is famed for its witty lines and sleek sexual innuendo–much of it lifted directly from Chandler’s novel–and the cast is a dream near fair. Philip Marlowe would be played by a titanic many actors, but none of them ever bested Humphrey Bogart, who splendidly captures the feel of Chandler’s modern creation; with the role of Vivien Sternwood Lauren Bacall gives what might be the finest performance of her veil career; and the chemistry between the two is everything you’ve ever heard. The supporting cast is superlative, all the contrivance from Martha Vickers’ neurotic turn as Carmen Sternwood to Bob Steele’s purring hitman Canino. There’s simply not a fallacious trace to be found anywhere. Although the film really pre-dates the film noir movement the entire contemplate of THE Expansive SLEEP anticipates noir to a distinguished degree–it would be tremendously influential–and director Hawks gives everything a tantalizing edge from begin to enact.
Two versions of THE Gargantuan SLEEP are included on the DVD: the film as it was originally shot and the film as it was released to theatres in 1946. The dependable differences between the two are fairly tiny, but they reveal indispensable. Although the unusual version is somewhat easier to follow in terms of sage, it lacks the flash that makes the theatrical version such a memorable experience; it is easy to gaze why Hawks elected to rescript and reshoot several key scenes as well as add current ones, and both newcomers and aged fans will have fun comparing the two. The DVD also includes an scrumptious documentary on the differences between the films and the motivations unhurried them. I don’t usually comment on relate quality unless there is a glaring sing, but several reviewers have distinguished portions of this print have a flicker or seem a bit washed out. I noticed these problems, but I can’t say that they in any device distracted from my enjoyment of the film, and they certainly don’t prevent me from recommending it–be it on video or this DVD. And I recommend it very, very strongly indeed.
“Two…Two… Two Movies in One,” could be the ad line for this unbelievable DVD. Warner clearly understands that DVDs should offer the customer something unique other than impartial a fresh play format. Here we acquire a two-sided disc containing both versions of this movie: a pre-release slit from 1944, seen mostly by servicemen oversees; and, the 1946 release, recut with reshot scenes to promote the chemistry between Bogart and Bacall (she had become a star between ’44 and ’46) . This would be enough to account for buying this DVD, but Warner goes even further, providing an insightful documentary explaining the cuts and changes between the two movie versions–it’s like being in a very excellent film appreciation class. While most DVDs seem overpriced to me, this one may be underpriced–especially considering it’s one of the most intriging movies ever made. After watching both versions of the film, and also the documentary, I smooth don’t fully understand the status, but this movie really is all about atmosphere, dialogue and stout acting. A fantastic addition to any movie collection.

Blazing Saddles Streaming.
Movie Title: Blazing Saddles Blazing Saddles is available for streaming or downloading. |
Blazing Saddles is one of the big comedies of all time. Unfortunately, it’s likely that no major studio today would release it. South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, Something About Mary and American Pie (all hilarious movies which I would highly recommend, by the design) have toilet humor that makes Mel Brooks at his most graphic seem like a Disney movie in comparison. However, today’s politically fair Hollywood would be shy with a comedy that uses racial epithets left and true, worrying about the backlash that subject matter would cause.
This is too poor because Blazing Saddles shows that such language, given the suitable context, can actually combat bigotry by showing how tiresome it really is. Cleavon Slight, as Sheriff Bart, and Gene Wilder, as The Waco Kid, are presented as islands of sanity in a sea of ignorant, racist townspeople. The ‘n’ word is thrown out repeatedly, but is intended as an insult to the people who say it rather than a slur against blacks. Mel Brooks, a very liberal Democrat, recognized that racism is offensive and sinful in nature and showed it in its moral light in Blazing Saddles. As a result, the film does more to ridicule racism and bigotry than most serious “message films” on the same subject ever could.
Unfortunately, the corporate suits who now race the broad studios are more shrinking about image and profits than producing quality movies. As long as a film offends as few people as possible and appeals to as many members of the general public as possible (preferably between the ages of 18 and 35), the executives like it — even if the film has no originality or artistic merit at all. As a result, films like Blazing Saddles and TV shows like All in the Family are taboo these days. Hollywood has lost a lot of valiant and courage since 1974. Glance Blazing Saddles and you will realize honest how mighty.
“…of plan cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.” Thus spoke Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman), the Region Procurer, Attorney General and Assistant to the Governor as he plotted against the residents of Rock Ridge in Mel Brooks’ hilarious western spoof “Blazing Saddles”, which was first released to theaters in 1974. With the meager budget of only $2.6-million, the film grossed over $119.5-million, making it the highest grossing western of all time until the release of “Dances with Wolves” in 1990, which grossed over $184-million. The success of “Blazing Saddles” is attributable in spacious section to the gracious direction and writing (in conjunction with several other writers) of Mel Brooks, who (of course) also acted in the film in three separate roles: as Gov. William J. LePetomaine, an Indian chief and a World War I aviator. Equally primary are the many very talented comedic actors who brought the film to life.

The position of “Blazing Saddles”, as I eluded to in my review opening, takes position primarily in the fictional old-west town of Rock Ridge, whose residents seemingly all have the same last name and who have been mercilessly besieged by a group of thugs who are lead by a man named Taggart (Slim Pickens, 1919-1983) . After the thugs demolish the sheriff of Rock Ridge, the residents send an urgent plea to Gov. LePetomaine to immediately appoint a unusual sheriff. Gov. LePetomaine delegates the appointment to his assistant Hedley Lamarr, whose improper secret agenda is the destruction of Rock Ridge to gain diagram for a novel railroad line. Lamarr devises what he believes will be the final, unconscionable inducement to the residents of Rock Ridge for them to vacate: the appointment of a shaded sheriff, Murky Bart (Cleavon Microscopic, 1939-1992) . Most of the residents of Rock Ridge are aghast when Sheriff Bart rides into town. However, he speedy acquires a sidekick in Jim ‘The Waco Kid’ (Gene Wilder) and some unsolicited attentions from the heavily accented visiting stage performer Lili Von Shtupp (Madeline Kahn, 1942-1999), whose passions include the consumption of schnitzengruben. The record continues to entertain as it builds to a climax that only the zigzag comedic genius of Mel Brooks could devise. Also, in classic Mel Brooks fashion, the film includes several musical interludes that include the film’s title song (sung by Frankie Laine), “The Ballad of Rock Ridge”, “I’m Tired” (sung by Madeline Kahn), “The French Mistake” and “April in Paris”. Other memorable characters include Olson Johnson (David Huddleston), Rev. Johnson (Liam Dunn, 1916-1976), Mongo (Alex Karras in his first big-screen role), Howard Johnson (John Hillerman), Van Johnson (George Furth), Gabby Johnson (Jack Starrett, 1936-1989), Harriett Johnson (Carol DeLuise, a.k.a. Carol Arthur), Dr. Sam Johnson (Richard Collier, 1919-2000), Buddy Bizarre (Dom DeLuise) and a cameo by Count Basie (1904-1984) . There were also several brief uncredited appearances by Anne Bancroft, Gilda Radner (1946-1989) and Rodney Allen Rippy who played Bart at age 5.
Overall, I rate “Blazing Saddles” with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars. It is a hysterically droll film that I can highly recommend to everyone. Though none of Mel Brooks’ other films were as financially successful as “Blazing Saddles”, many are much of mention, including “The Producers” (1968), “Young Frankenstein” (1974), “High Dread” (1978), “The History of the World, Section 1″ (1981) and “Spaceballs” (1987) .

This is a review of only the Todd-AO version of the movie included in the original 50th anniversary edition of Oklahoma. The main Cinemascope version on Disc One is outstanding and deserves 5 stars and more. However the accompanying Todd-AO version on Disc Two looks abysmal in comparison.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Oklahoma!! Click Here
For those who are unaware, the producers filmed two versions of Oklahoma simultaneously, the one commonly seen which is the Cinemascope version and the other, the Todd-AO version which is the one that Rodgers and Hammerstein preferred. It is seldom seen because theaters did not enjoy the special equipment to project these Todd-AO movies (extremely widescreen with zigzag edges to give an enveloping finish) . The 2 movies are not the same. They did not unbiased expend different cameras or lenses to film the same scene. The films are different in that every scene is restaged specifically for either Cinemascope or Todd-AO. This is certain in a side by side comparison – the individual scenes are subtly different. Some scenes are shot at slightly different angles, some scenes are shot at different times of the day, some scenes include cast members seen in one version but not the other while all scenes indicate subtle variations in performances between one version and the next. But the most definite disagreement is that only the Todd-AO version includes the Oklahoma Overture as well as the Intermission, En’tracte and Finale (Exit Music) which Richard Rodgers wrote for Oklahoma but never included in the Cinemascope version. The slay result is that the Todd-AO version runs for 147mins while the Cinemascope version runs for honest 139mins, a fact that Fox fudges by giving the runtime of the movie as 145mins.
The Todd-AO version presented here is virtually unrestored. It is so murky you can barely read the opening credits. It is grimy. Todd-AO is shot on 70mm film (Cinemascope is on 35mm), so it should yelp attractive detail. Instead the transfer is so soft and blurry, it is like watching a second-generation VHS tape. And although Todd-AO is shot at 30fps, as opposed to 24fps in standard film, for the yell purpose of reducing film flicker, there is more flicker on the Todd-AO transfer than on the main Cinemascope version. This is a very sorry presentation of what should have been the definitive edition.

If you are buying this solely for the Cinemascope version, you won’t be disappointed. It is indeed a spy to view. If you are thinking of buying this for the Todd-AO version which few audiences today would have had the chance to glance, I’d recommend waiting till Fox reissues a properly restored edition of it. In fact the Todd-AO version looks better on the passe laserdisc from more than 10 years ago.
A sidenote to Fox: Please do not harangue your customers with those extremely loud, obnoxiously noisy anti-piracy messages placed at the front of all your DVDs. People who recall these DVDs are not the ones pirating your movies. I inserted this DVD into the player expecting to be greeted by the radiant music of Oklahoma only to be assailed by the abrasively loud banging, thumping and thudding of your aggravatingly annoying anti-piracy message. Do not punish your legitimate customers or you’ll gather us all going to the side of the pirates.
I am glad to behold a bunch of other folks were as horribly dissapointed as I was to throw this DVD into the player and instead of being treated by what should be a breathtakingly arresting and gorgeous Todd-AO version on disc two….gaze a muddy mess…which isn’t come the 35mm version on disc one!
Fans of the Todd-AO process (observe Patton some time folks) know what an absolutely unsurpassed format it was….and the DVDs that have reach out (like the aforementioned PATTON) that have been taken from it stun with clarity and color…
I don’t know how many generations removed from the novel disc 2 of this dwelling is ….but its not worth a $50 DVD players time…
Its particularly ironic that 20th Century destroy so great other region on the disc on short features extolling the virtues of Todd-AO…only to indicate such a garbage transfer….
SHAME ON YOU FOX….this should be as glorious as the Sound of Music …and its a huge broad letdown….and I like many others have been counting the days for this release…
….I am updating this review…with the official excuse from FOX home Entertainment…which follows..

that it appears less detailed than the dilapidated Fox DVD release from 2000. We
feel it is very considerable that we communicate the issues on hand
regarding the Todd-AO version of the film.
As you know well, director Fred Zinnemann filmed “Oklahoma!” using two
separate film techniques. The 35mm CinemaScope version and the then current,
large gauge 65mm film format called Todd-AO.
Firstly, the capable news is that the first disc features the CinemaScope
version of the movie for the first time on DVD, and looks superlative.
This is the main feature of the current 2-disc Anniversary edition.
However, when it comes to the bonus disc featuring the Todd-AO version,
we have received reports from concerned fans that the Todd-AO version
looks ‘fuzzy’ or ‘less detailed’ than the customary DVD release from 2000. How
can that possibly be?
When “Oklahoma!” was first released on DVD in 2000 it was the relative
infancy of DVD, and Twentieth Century Fox utilized a widescreen video
transfer of the Todd-AO version that had been made for VHS and laserdisc
back in 1994. The resulting widescreen transfer (with dim bars top and
bottom) was a very aesthetic presentation of the Todd-AO version.
Now, in 2005, Fox DVDs are mastered for the highest quality, supporting
widescreen TVs and HDTVs that feature a 16×9 cloak format (as opposed
to 4×3 TV format) . We could not simply re-use the used 1994-vintage 4×3
video transfer of the Todd-AO version because on an HDTV the aged format
would stutter gruesome video artifacts, anomalies and edge enhancement that
would detract from the film. This would be immediately apparent on any
widescreen standard definition TV and more so on a high definition TV.
That being decided, it was relieve to the IP of the Todd-AO version for an
all unusual high-definition transfer.
This is where time plays a detrimental role in the process. The Todd-AO
print had severely deteriorated since the 1994 video transfer and
presented a nightmare for the authoring of the DVD.
A painstaking restoration of the fresh elements was undertaken. The
negative was so damaged that a ‘wet gate IP’ had to be created in order
to support the film source. The biggest plight inherent in the Todd-AO
version is the appearance of soft focus and powerful color
breathing. The digital restoration team agonized over using the right
amount of dirt removal (‘DRS’) in order to retract the glue stains and
tears, while aloof trying to retain the already soft image from getting
any softer. They addressed the color breathing as well, but too much
adjustment would ultimately further wound the video presentation by
introducing ringing and aliasing caused by artificially sharpening the
picture.
Indeed, if you peer at the ‘Auctioning Ado Annie’ scene (chapter 30) on
the Todd-AO DVD, you can tranquil gawk very severe color-flashing on the far
left side of the frame. So carve was the flashing that no amount of
digital correction would aid.
The process of restoring a terrible element is a difficult one, and Fox
stands by its decision to give suitable representations of source
materials. While artificial edge enhancement fixes one plight, it
actually introduces more problems.
Ultimately, the decision was made to allow the DVD to point to the
Todd-AO version as accurately as it can be without artificially making
it appear sharper.
In 1954/5, “Oklahoma!” was the first studio feature film to spend the
new Todd-AO process, and as such, the movie was a shake out for the
system. Todd-AO lens and equipment were retro-fitted to existing camera
technology, which resulted in anomalies that would present significantly
challenging some 50-plus years later in the digital age. By the time of
“Around the World in 80 Days,” released nearly two years later, the
Todd-AO process was significantly more stable.
Sadly, in this day of high definition programming and movies, the
current Todd-AO print of “Oklahoma!” does not stand up to scrutiny of
what we reflect a tremendous format film should stare like. It simply isn’t as
sharp or as detailed as we remember it being. And it certainly doesn’t
compare to today’s high definition programming.
So while the CinemaScope version is radiant, the Todd-AO version of
“Oklahoma!” confounds DVD fans and aficionados 50 years after it was
created. It may indeed suffer by comparison, but is, in its enjoy just,
a honorable transfer given today’s technology.
